What actually happens on the day your tree is removed

Most people only remove a big tree once or twice in their lives, so it's fair enough that the day itself is a mystery. Knowing what happens, and what good practice looks like, also makes it much easier to compare quotes. Here's how a professional removal runs.

Before anyone starts a saw

The crew walks the job first. That means confirming the scope from the quote, checking the drop zones, looking at what's under and around the tree (roofs, pools, fences, gardens, powerlines), and agreeing on the plan for the day. You should know who the crew leader is and the plan should match what was quoted. If council approval applied to your tree, that was sorted before this morning, not today.

• Gear check: saws, ropes, rigging and the chipper all get looked over
• Exclusion zone: the work area is set and kept clear. That includes kids and dogs, who always want front-row seats
• Services check: powerlines, phone lines, and anything buried where machinery will work

How the tree comes down

There are two basic methods. If there's room, sections are felled from the ground into a clear drop zone. In most suburban yards there isn't room, so the tree is dismantled: a climber (or an elevated work platform on some jobs) takes the tree apart from the top down, and every piece over anything that matters is roped and lowered under control rather than dropped.

This is where experience shows. Rigging a 300 kilo limb off a gum over your patio is a skilled, methodical process, and it's the reason a technical removal costs more than a paddock drop of the same tree.

The cleanup

Branches go through the chipper as the job progresses, so the yard isn't buried in debris at any point. By the end of the day:

• Green waste is chipped, and you can keep the mulch (it's excellent for gardens) or we take it away
• Timber is cut to manageable rounds, kept for firewood if you want it, or removed
• The lawn gets a rake and blow-down, and we do a final walk-through with you

If you've booked stump grinding, it happens the same day or on a follow-up visit depending on the machine required. Either way you're told which at quote time.

What you need to do beforehand

Not much, but a little prep makes the day smoother: move cars out of the driveway so the chipper and truck can get close, unlock side gates, bring washing in off the line, and keep pets inside. If access runs through a neighbour's side, we'll have arranged that with you in advance.

The insurance question nobody asks

Ask it. Any outfit putting a person and a chainsaw above your house should carry public liability insurance (ten or twenty million dollars is standard) and be willing to show you the certificate. We are, and we do. It's also worth asking who's actually doing the work, because some cheap quotes are subcontracted to whoever's available that week.
