At the end of most jobs we ask the same question: do you want the mulch? Plenty of people say no out of reflex, and honestly, it's worth a second thought.
Fresh arborist chip is a mix of wood, leaf and bark that breaks down into exactly what SEQ's sandy and clay soils are missing. Spread 75 to 100mm deep it suppresses weeds, holds soil moisture through dry spells and slowly feeds everything under it.
The usual worries mostly don't hold up. Fresh chip on top of soil doesn't steal nitrogen from your plants (that only matters if you dig it in), and it doesn't attract termites any more than any other garden timber. Just keep it a hand's width off plant stems and off the house slab edge.
Give it a few weeks in a pile if you'd like it darker and more broken down before spreading. Or spread it fresh under established trees and natives, which is exactly what the bush does anyway.
